Washington Elite Skating School Lessons At The National Gallery of Art

This season, Guest Services offers skating lessons for all ages, directed and taught by Emme Porter, Bruce Porter, Jr., and their Washington Elite Skating School team of instructors.

Emme Porter has more than 15 years of skating and coaching experience in all disciplines of skating and is a national and international ice dancing competitor. She has also danced in and choreographed performances for the NHL Washington Capitals’ Red Rockers for five years.

Bruce Porter, Jr. has more than 20 years of teaching experience in hockey, ice dancing, and field moves. He is a national and international competitor in ice dancing and competed in the European Figure Skating Championships in 2008 and 2009. Emme and Bruce represented Azerbaijan in international competitions and retired from competitive skating in 2014.

Ice Skating Lesson Information

November –  March 
Classes will be offered for different ages and abilities through the Learn to Skate USA Basic Skills Program. Classes are separated into age-appropriate categories and consist of a comprehensive lesson and evaluation structure that is exciting, rewarding, safe, and fun. This season we will offer Specialty Group skating classes for Adults, featuring Fitness Skating Classes, Happy Hour skating lesson, Coffee Club skating lessons and a competition prep class for kids.

Class Fees:

One Session – (5) 30 minute lessons = $145
Full Season – (3) 30 minute lessons (November-March) = $385
30 Minute “Pick-Up” (Walk-in Group Lesson) = $ 35  (register 15 minutes before lesson)
45 Minute “Pick-Up” (Walk-In Specialty Class Lesson) = $70 – (register 15 minutes before lesson)
Single session “Specialty Class” – (5) 45 min lessons = $290

You must first obtain a membership number from Learn To Skate USA
($17.25, good for one year) in order to sign up for lessons/classes.

For young students who have not had organized skating instruction. Students work on falling and getting up properly, standing and marching in place and while moving. The adult/parents attending the class must be able to skate without assistance in order to assist the student in the learning process.  Helmet required.

Classes introduce children ages 3 to 6 to the basics of skating through interactive on-ice games, developing preliminary coordination and strength necessary to move on skates. Skaters will learn the basics of balance, marching, and gliding.

Snowplow Sam 1
 — ages 3-6 | no experience – for beginners who have never skated. Students will learn the proper way to fall and get up, marching, two-foot glides and backward wiggles, while playing fun games.  Helmet required.
Snowplow Sam 2 — ages 3-6 | for beginners who have skated before. Students will learn to march and glide, dip while moving, backward wiggles and forward two-foot swizzles.  Helmet required.
Snowplow Sam 3  ages 3-6 | for beginners who have skated before. Students will learn long glides, 1 ft glides, backward swizzles and snowplow stops while moving.  Helmet required.

Classes teach the fundamentals of skating and the basic skills. They are designed to help children master fundamental moves, such as skating forward and backward, as well more complicated maneuvers, including crossovers, turns, beginning spins, and hops.

Each Free Skate level is divided into four sections: moves in the field, spins, dance/footwork sequence and jumps. The Free Skate levels are designed to give skaters a strong foundation on which to build their skills. This is the point where the skater can choose whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating.

Kids can work on short routines in preparation to participate in skating competitions and shows. This is an Introductory group class and kids who want to compete will likely need private instruction in addition to this class.

The Happy Hour Skate is an opportunity for adults to learn-to-skate, practice their skills in a social and relaxed atmosphere. The instructor will coordinate small groups of students and work with students, one-on-one and in small groups throughout the lesson. The instructor will help new students learn to stand-up, skate and fall properly, while also challenging other more experienced students with new skills that are appropriate for their abilities. Hot wine and snack specials will be available for purchase before and after class at the Pavilion Cafe.

A Coffee Club is an opportunity for adult ice skaters to get together for skating practice, exercise, and social interaction. Formats vary depending on instructors, but the idea is to have a 45-minute adults-only skating instruction session during a weekday.

Private lessons are intended for 1 student, additional students are $15 each (maximum 3)
*Private lessons are taught in increments of 30 or 45 minutes or 1 hour. Admission and skate rental (if needed) are purchased separately. There is 24-hour cancellation policy required to avoid being charged for missed lessons.

Reservations must be made a minimum of 7 days in advance. 50% Deposit Due for booking. Admission for ice time and the cost of skate rental are purchased separately.

$14 per child for 30 minutes (8 child minimum)
Saturdays only: 11:00 am – 12 noon, by appointment

$35 per person for 30 minutes (5 person minimum)

Tips for Success:

PROPER ATTIRE

Layered, warm clothing that does not restrict movement, gloves are recommended for beginners for outdoor skating. and Helmets are required.

PARKING

Free parking on Madison Drive Saturdays and Sundays, and 3-hour limit weekdays. Meters are located on Constitution Avenue and 7th Street surrounding the rink.

METRORAIL/METRO

The nearest Metrorail stops are Judiciary Square on the Red Line, Archives–Penn Quarter–Navy Memorial on the Yellow/Green Lines, and Smithsonian on the Blue/Orange Lines. Metrobus stops are located on 4th Street and 7th Street NW.
